Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, other screening methods

  • Ultrasound. It uses sound waves to create images of breast tissues. It is especially useful for detecting tumors in breasts with dense tissue or implants.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging. It uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body. It is a more sensitive procedure than the previous ones, but also more expensive and time-consuming.

Both options are usually used as an adjunct to mammography, mainly in two cases:

  • Women at high risk of developing breast cancer.
  • When mammography is inconclusive.

At present, there is some controversy about the routine use of these procedures as a primary method, both because of their cost and their limitations.

For all these reasons, it seems clear that the future of breast cancer screening is promising. Research and development have made it possible to greatly improve survival rates for these tumors. Medical science and technology are advancing exponentially. Consequently, it cannot be ruled out that the new forms of screening will rapidly improve and eventually replace the current ones.
